The Telephone Building was built in 1896 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The building was built for the Southwestern Telephone and Telegraph Company and it served that company from 1896-1938. The building is a four-story masonry commercial structure built under the supervision of architect Alfred Muller in a Romanesque Revival Style. Muller was a major architect in Galveston in the late 19th century.
Within walking distance of our front door is the Scottish Rite Masonry Building, the Pix Building, St. Mary's Cathedral, United States National Bank Building and the 1894 Grand Opera House.
Our building survived the Hurricane of 1900 and has the 1900 Storm Survivor Plaque to prove it! The building received a major renovation in the 1990s by the Strand District. The upper floors have been converted into residential lofts.
